While molecular diagnostic techniques are a direct indicator of disease, serological techniques are an indirect diagnostic assay, which determines whether a person has overcome the disease and is therefore immunized. Thus, it is a complementary technique to PCR, especially in those cases where PCR gives a negative result.
The GSD INgezim COVID assays use the SARS-CoV-2 nucleoprotein (N protein) as the antigen for the detection of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2. The N protein is one of the most abundant early-onset proteins of the virus, as well as being highly immunogenic and therefore a good candidate antigen for the diagnosis of COVID19.
The presence of specific antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in patient samples indirectly proves that the individual has suffered from the infection.
